I always think one of the most wonderful things about running is how inclusive it is. It’s not often you might see athletic teenagers happily sharing the same fitness goals as 70-something grans, but on Saturday mornings at parkrun (oh parkrun, I miss you!) you would. Every single week. But while the numbers of older runners are growing, there are still some common misconceptions about age and running. There’s that old chestnut about running ruining your knees, for instance.
If we could banish just this one untruthabout running, I would be one happy editor. The next time some ardent non-runner expresses concerns about your joints, smile sweetly, and remind them of some actual facts: running prevents osteoporosis. It helps manage the symptoms of menopause. It prevents the risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer by up to 35%. And along withthese physical miracles, the benefits to our mental healthare massive, staving off depression, anxiety and stress. Whether we take up running at school, or we begin in our 70s, we inspire those around us to become more active, and our increased physical activity means we bother our GP less than non-runners. Our daily run benefits us, our families and society at large. What this means, Mr Ardent Non-Runner, is that we are healthier, happier and more content than you. And we have stronger knees.
Find out about the superpowers we have as we continue to run through our 40s to our 70s and beyond on page 34.
And happy running.
