Armed to succeed: Inov-8’s team Get A Grip
“If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you’re not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later.” A good lesson for life from Richard Branson, and also one that summed up some of my apprehensions about embarking on a weekend of fell running and a race taking in one of the Lake District’s highest peaks, courtesy of inov-8. As a relatively experienced ultra runner with five years and four 100+ mile races under my belt, I go out of my way to escape the city and explore the trails and hills within a train ride of London. I know the North and South Downs Ways like the back of my hand. But Box Hill’s 250 metres of ascent is dwarfed by even the smallest peaks in the Lake District.
I was relatively uninitiated into the world of fell running, albeit I’d read Richard Askwith’s classic book Feet in the Clouds cover to cover, several times. His tales of hardy runners sustaining broken limbs, throwing themselves down fell sides, painted the pursuit as an extreme sport to a Londoner who counts herself lucky to get in a couple of hundred feet of elevation in a week of running, with the added hazard of the occasional slippery pavement on a rainy day if I’m lucky.
