If you’ve ever ventured into the business district of a city after 5pm on a weeknight, you’ll be familiar with the sort of hoo-ha you might find there: brash business blokes, perching with a pint, giving out their best banter to gain status as ‘top lad’.
Venture into the City of London on the evening of the Great City Race (24 July this year) and you’ll find something similar – except some decent banter won’t earn you your stripes on this particular weeknight – running 5K in an incredibly quick time, however, will.
Of course, there is more to this corporate 5K race than fast and lairy city dwellers. The race attracts a cross-section of runners – men and women – of all abilities, each representing one of circa 400 companies. Companies enter as a team, and both individual and team results are recorded. This year was the 13th edition of the race and raised funds and awareness for Seeing is Believing – an organisation working to tackle avoidable blindness across the world. Official race beneficiary since 2009, ten pounds from each entry is donated to the charity and all money raised for Seeing is Believing is matched by race sponsor Standard Chartered.
