I firstread about Badwater 135 back in 2008, when I read Ultramarathon Man by Dean Karnazes. At that time, I didn’t for one minute think I’d experience it, but 14 years later, I was given the opportunity to crew it thanks to ultrarunning legend and friend, Pamela Chapman Markle.
Since taking up ultrarunning at age 55, Pam has blazed a path, setting and breaking records in nearly every race she toes the line at. But in January 2021, Pam’s ultrarunning came to a grinding halt after she fractured her femoral head and slipped three discs in her back in the lead up to the 2021 Badwater 135, ultimately forcing her out that year.
