I have lived with a severe mental health condition for 10 years. This has led me to be sectioned multiple times and I spent many months in a psychiatric hospital. I was diagnosed with a condition called schizoaffective disorder, a combination of bipolar and schizophrenia. Exercise has been invaluable to me, and running and the gym are healthy coping skills that help me manage my illness.
For me, positive mental health means being able to get out of bed in the morning, to be able to step outside the front door. Good mental health is being trusted to stay in the house alone for a period of time (I live at home with my parents, who are also my full-time careers). It’s to trust and feel confi dent that I can stay safe, even if I’m not having a great day.
