If you’re training for a race, you’ll probably know that going the distance doesn’t just boil down to how physically fit and strong you are. There’s way more to fitness than simply moving your muscles; in fact mental agility is just as important as stamina when it comes to striving to get yourself across the finishing line.
And when it comes to mental agility, you may be surprised to hear us talking about your digestive system as well. However, the gut is often referred to as the second brain and it plays a huge role in your training performance. The link between the gut and brain is known as the enteric nervous system, a complex neural network that sends messages to our brain through trillions of bacteria that reside in the gastrointestinal tract.
The brain uses this interaction with microflora via the longest cranial nerve in the body called the cranial nerve, to regulate basic functions to do with mood, memory and learning, so it makes sense that looking after the digestive system can affect general wellbeing including concentration and motivation to train.
