Did you know that 64% of girls drop out of sport before they turn 16? This is the shocking reality that Lucy Waterlow sets out in our important feature about girls and sport on page 30. It’s depressing and terrifying in equal measure, because the reasons she lists strike a very familiar chord.
The reasons why girls today are backing away from sport are the exact same reasons I did back in the 80s. I really hoped that these days, things might have changed, but depressingly the statistics seem to suggest otherwise. Girls just like younger me still feel that sport isn’t for them.
Back then, I thought that sport was only for those who excelled, not for those of us who came last in races, or couldn’t jump very high or throw the ball with sufficient velocity. At no point in my teens did I think that sport was there for everyone to enjoy, and that moving my body regularly would help me appreciate it more, and that it would nurture my mental health, and make me feel good.
These days, I know all those things are true – and so do you! So let’s make a pact to pass on this knowledge to our friends, our families, our daughters and our granddaughters. Let’s make spaces more accessible for girls, let’s speak to our schools about PE provision, let’s write to our MPs.
