THE INJURY
Patella Tendinopathy Area affected
Knee joint Recovery time Anywhere from three weeks to three months depending on severity.
The patella is a triangular rounded bone that covers the knee joint. The patella connects the thigh muscle (rectus femurs) to the shin bone (tibia) and it helps you bend and straighten your knee for actions like walking, running and gym work.
With excessive and constant loaded knee flexion – ie, putting weight on your knee while it’s bent – the tendon is put under stress. That stress can cause small tears in it, which then present as the pain you feel while you run or walk. You won’t be surprised to hear this, but this kind of excessive loading is very common in exercises such as running and jumping, both of which require shock absorption to mitigate the impact of your legs into the ground.
