WOMEN CAN MARATHON
Tipton St John, a tiny village in rural Devon, again found itself welcoming hundreds of female runners to its narrow country lanes, as it hosted the second Women Can Marathon and Relay on 27 May.
2017 had seen the resounding success of the inaugural event, held to honour the 50th anniversary of running pioneer Kathrine Switzer’s historic run in the 1967 Boston Marathon, when, wearing bib number 261, she was nearly removed from the course by an angry race official, purely because she was a woman.
Research by Cardiff University at the 2017 Women Can event had confirmed that women-only, off-road, long distance races, with a supportive ethos, were wanted, needed and appreciated by women.
