Sally Gunnell was a UK track and field legend in the 80s and 90s, one of those athletes everyone remembers, and who inspired a new generation of women to keep breaking barriers. She loved competition so much we were always on the edge of the sofa, willing her on to victory.
Sally captured the hearts of the UK; her talent was endless as was her mental toughness. Her journey to world domination started in long jump and heptathlon events for Essex Ladies, showing the depth of her talent from an early age. She narrowly missed selection for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, but by 1986, she’d won the UK title for the 100m hurdles, then took Commonwealth Gold, beating Olympic champion Glynis Nunn.
