Is tension affecting my breathing as I run?
Running is wonderful for reducing stress with invigorating endorphins, mind-calming neurotransmitters and all that deep breathing. But is underlying stress affecting your breathing when you run, and therefore affecting your running?
Sarah Ramsden is a qualified Yoga Alliance Professionals senior yoga teacher with 20 years’ experience and over 15,000 accredited hours (sportsyoga.co.uk)
Stress puts us in a sympathetic neural state associated with the freeze/ flight/fight response. With this comes shallow, faster breathing and a shift to chest breathing, plus a tightening of the abdominals and a forward hunching of the shoulders. How does this affect your running? Tightening your abdominals makes it harder to relax your diaphragm and this means that you inhale less oxygen with each breath. It’s less efficient as you will need to breathe faster to match your oxygen intake with your body’s increased O2 demand.
