From writer to author in two weeks

‘I have been a regular and avid reader ofWriting Magazinefor a few years now and I’ve enjoyed some success in its competitions, had a letter printed, been put Under the Microscope by Mr McCreet and had my writing retreat (The Welsh Writing Shed) showcased in Subscriber Spotlight,’ writes subscriber Chris Clement-Green.

‘But all this pales into insignificance thanks to January’s issue of WM!

‘Page 91 contained a half-page article on Mirror Books, who were open for submissions for non-fiction memoirs. I immediately resurrected my MA manuscript from 2013 – Blues Two and Teddy-bears: A memoir of female policing in the nineteen-eighties – and started a new edit. Four years had passed and I had continued to develop as a writer; thanks in great part to WM.

‘I sent off the required synopsis and first reworked sample chapters to Jo Sollis at Mirror Books on 21 January and received an email back from her on the 23rd, asking to see the whole manuscript.I worked day and night for another week to finish the re-editing and sent the completed manuscript to Jo on 31 January. The following afternoon I received another email asking for a meeting at their offices in Canary Wharf. ‘This meeting subsequently took place at a publishing conference in Oxfordshire on 8 February – where I was offered a publishing contract with an option on my next book. After decades of work I had moved from writer to author in just over two weeks!

‘The book has been retitled Into the Valley (as I was with Thames Valley Police) and it was launched at Blackwells’ in Oxford on 19 August.’
