STAR LETTER

FATHER’S PRIDE

On 1 November my father passed away unexpectedly at the age of only 74. I wanted the world to stop, as in the wonderful poem Funeral Blues by WH Auden. I soon realised, as I drove up and down the A38 arranging things for his final goodbye, that nothing stops.

I decided that I wanted to write the eulogy for my father to tell the world, or at least those who came to his funeral, what a great man he was. Tears owed at every attempt, so I decided to open the most recent WM that had arrived but still lay on my desk unopened. As I flicked through the pages I understood that my love of reading and writing had come from my father. I recalled the first hardback book he gave me, The Jungle Book. at book with its glossy cover, with wonderful characters captured my imagination. My love of books is a beautiful gift that my father fuelled. An avid reader himself, we swapped and shared books throughout his life.
