The future’s indie

Small can be beautiful when it comes to book presses, says Clare Stevens in her guide to independent publishing

If you’re disheartened by agents’ rejections, yet daunted by the thought of self-publishing – and the relentless self-promotion it takes to get noticed in a crowded market place – there is a third way. You may want to try your hand with an independent publisher.

There are hundreds of small press ‘indie’ publishers out there, many of which accept non-agented submissions. They cross all genres – some are very niche, others more mainstream. They vary in size, scale and reach. Some have business premises and editorial teams, others are one-man bands operating out of someone’s back bedroom. But although each year a few fold, many have established longevity and earned themselves a distinct place in the market.

Of course there are pros and cons to signing with a small press publisher. Advances, if paid, are usually much lower and print runs smaller, and independents often struggle for shelfspace in mainstream bookshops which have to give priority to ‘sure bet’ books.
