Writing for children is very competitive, so your writing needs to be in top form to stand the best chance of being taken on by a publisher or agent.

Imagine your book is a jigsaw puzzle – where the jigsaw pieces are the essential components you need for outstanding storytelling. So far in this series, we’ve looked at plot, setting, characters and theme in children’s fiction. This month, in the last instalment, we will be slotting in the final missing piece: writing technique. How to improve your writing? Try the following.

Reading around

It’s been said many times before (and that’s because it’s true) but the best way to learn how to write, is to read. Read as many children’s books as you can, especially (but not exclusively) in the genre or age range you’d like to write for. After you are familiar with a book, go back to the beginning and analyse the text. Ask questions to analyse how exactly the story has been delivered and the impact it has had on you as a reader. By analysing the text, you can use your research to improve your own writing. Ask questions such as:
