THE GHOST OF ST CADOC’S

Michael Callaghan is a lawyer living and working in Glasgow. He has often dabbled in writing fiction but only began to take it seriously in the past year. In that time he has, prior to this win, taken first place in the Chorley & District Writers National Competition and second in the Nottingham Writers Group National Competition. He was also shortlisted in WM’s annual Crime Short Story Competition and The Doris Gooderson Award. He is currently working on other short fiction and the draft of a novel.

I don’t believe in ghosts. I know there are ghosts. It was twenty three years ago and I was just a schoolboy when this happened; but it did happen. We went looking for a ghost; and we found one.

That summer I was just starting Primary Six at St Cadoc’s. It’s closed down now. A new ‘Super School’ to serve the whole area has been built and the St Cadoc’s site is earmarked for the motorway extension. But it was the village school back then. And this began one late August afternoon when we were waiting in line for the school bus. There was Kevin, Charlie, Kevin’s little sister Kate, and me. Normally we wouldn’t be talking to girls, especially not one two years younger, but it was home time and such rules were relaxed. Anyway, for some reason Kevin brought up the subject of ghosts.
