Ten top tips: Spring into action

Juggle your writing time to make the most of every precious hour with tips from tutor Liz Gregory

Whilst the clocks going forward signals the start of spring and of longer, warmer evenings, it does also leave us short by one hour on the last Sunday in March – and with many of us devoting weekend time to our favourite hobbies, that can mean it’s our writing output that suffers. With that in mind, here are some suggestions for clawing back that lost time by writing smarter and more efficiently.

When do you write most productively?

The clocks technically go forward next month at 1am, but most of us won’t stay up and dutifully move the hands forward to 2am in the small hours of the morning. Instead, move the time forward at a time when you would normally be at your least productive. I work far better in the morning than in the evening, so I put the clock forward when I go to bed. That way, the hour is absorbed into the night and doesn’t feel quite so lost (although I am very fond of my sleep). If the opposite is true for you, keep working into the night and then put your clock forward when you wake up in the morning (although make sure you don’t forget – I used to work weekends and once turned up an hour late one Sunday because, yep, I’d forgotten).
