A pootling opinion

I’ve just watched an informative and enjoyable programme on Philip Pullman; it was really interesting to learn how his own life experiences and beliefs are re ected in his action. While agreeing with the majority of his ideas, I was irritated by an example he gave concerning the incorrect usage of words. He produced a battered copy of Chambers 20th Century Dictionary, where the word feisty was apparently de ned as an aggressive farting dog, and it should not therefore be used to describe a female heroine – unless she resembles a atulent canine. In the same vein my mentor recently took me to task for describing a woman as hovering by the door – she’s not floating is she, he asked. No I agreed, but the meaning of this word has expanded. Language evolves and this fact is evident in the Chambers 21st Century Dictionary which de nes hovering as; to linger, especially anxiously or nervously and feisty as: spirited or lively (a small aggressive dog is also still listed, although no mention is made of it farting). I believe we should feel free to challenge even experienced writers who do not accept that some good descriptive words have evolved to mean new things.
