The matter of pacing within lines of a poem is vital as it helps to convey meaning and emotion. Each poet decides the pace that best suits the poem they are writing and the emotion contained within its lines. There are certain devices that can help create this and these include alliteration, punctuation, rhyming and juxtaposition of sounds. Often used individually in lines and phrasing, all these devices play a part in the matter of pacing and will define how a poem is read.
Short, sharp words and lines help to create a rapid rhythm. The following lines from I Saw A Jolly Hunter by Charles Causley put a reader in a bright mood: I saw a jolly hunter/ With a jolly gun/Walking in the country/In the jolly sun.
