International bestseller Tracy Chevalier shares the five books that inspire and influence her with Judith Spelman

US author Tracy Chevalier first became widely known to the reading public when she wrote her second novel, The Girl with the Pearl Earring, later turned into a very successful film. Since that novel in 1999, she has written a further nine novels and is working on her tenth. She takes the research that she has to do very seriously. When she wrote The Last Runaway, which involved English Quakers immigrating to Ohio, she involved herself in the Quaker religious practices. For the book she is now working on, she has turned her hand to needlepoint. Her retelling of Shakespeare’s Othello, New Boy was published in May 2017. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and in 2013 received Honorary Doctorates from Oberlin College and the University of East Anglia. She admits that she found choosing only five books to keep ‘was so hard’ yet those she has chosen are fascinating.
