BEHAVIOUR

STR ANGE GREETING!

QWe have an eight-year-old, large, neutered, male Yorkshire Terrier. When we were in the park the other day, he decided to say hello to another dog, who was also off-lead. He went straight up and cocked his leg on him! A few minutes later, before we caught up with him, he did the same to another dog — luckily the owners thought it was funny. Is there a reason for him doing this? I think he’s done it once before but it was a long time ago.

Linda Ashcroft, East Sussex.

Entire dogs will often scent mark more frequently.

Tamsin says: This is a really interesting behaviour and there could be a few factors influencing it. You can often see scent-marking behaviours, where the dog is trying to communicate lots of information about himself to other individuals through his urine. While this will tend to be on inanimate objects, it can occur on people or dogs as well.
