Examining samples under a microscope.
One of my favourite pieces of equipment in our practice is the microscope. It’s not the best microscope in the world, and I don’t make any claims on being the best at cytology, but it gets used every dayAmong my favourite things to look at under the microscope are cells from lumps.
My rule is that any lump bigger than a pea, or one that has been present for more than a month, should be checked out. It isn’t enough to simply feel and look at a lump, as appearances can be deceptive. Ideally the lump should be palpated, measured, and a sample taken. There are several different ways to take a biopsy, the easiest being a fine needle aspirate (FNA). Sometimes, this lets me give clients an answer in a few minutes.
