For the LOVE of dogs

Dog-lover Min Grant has cared for a stream of rescue dogs over the last eight years — 24 to be precise — but the catalyst for setting up her personal rescue was the death of her husband, Fraser. “Fraser and I both loved dogs and already had two chocolate Labradors, Beethoven and Brannigan. After Fraser passed away in 2011, I decided I would get another puppy, Bailey, before the others became too old and found him annoying,” recounted 58-year-old Min, who lives in the Lake District town of Keswick, in Cumbria.

“Then I lost Beethoven, and Branni was about 12 and really slowing up, so I decided to get a rescue as company for Bailey, an older dog as I didn’t want another puppy. I saw Toffee, an old fox red Labrador, on a rescue website and he looked so sad. I went to see him and fell in love. “He was about eight and totally stole my heart. He had had absolutely nothing in his life, and had suffered so much, rescued from an enclosure in Ireland where he lived with 50 other dogs in squalid conditions,” she recalled.

But Toffee wasn’t really the type of dog who wanted to play with others, plus Min discovered he had a stage four heart murmur. Then she saw Rolo, a chocolate Labrador puppy, for sale online. An unwanted Christmas present in danger of falling into the wrong hands, Min drove to Leeds the next day and bought him for £400 — “which I didn’t really have but I knew I had to save him. “I was hooked,” she admitted. “I set up my little rescue in Fraser’s memory and haven’t looked back. I love the oldies; they are so grateful and so easy to settle.”
