At Camp Bastion, the former British Army base in Afghanistan, on the site of the military working dog kennels, the men and women of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps (RAVC) erected a poignant memorial to their fallen.
It wasn’t a traditional plaque or plinth dusted in orange Afghan sand, instead it was a carved wooden paw secured with linked metal chains, symbolising the bond of soldier dog and handler. Powerful, unmissable, it stands tall to honour the memory of the two young dog handlers and their faithful canine companions, who were killed in action in the war in Afghanistan.
For the mothers of Lance Corporal Kenneth Rowe and Lance Corporal Liam Tasker there remains some small comfort in their everlasting grief — that their sons are not alone because they fell with their four-legged best friends beside them.
