The UK’s largest dog welfare charity has confirmed what we all suspected — that price hikes for puppies reached record levels during lockdown.
Statistics from Dogs Trust showed that some sellers of Britain’s most desirable breeds exploited demand, with the cost of Dachshunds rocketing from £973 in March to £1,838 in June, an increase of 89 per cent.
Similarly, Chow Chows soared in price by 67 per cent during the same period, from £1,119 to £1,872, with Pugs up 56 per cent from £684 to £1,064. Prices for French Bulldogs shot up by 52 per cent (£1,905 from £1,251) and Bulldogs by 31 per cent (£2,140 compared to £1,637).
