BEHAVIOUR
Lying down ensures an anxious dog can keep an eye on other approaching dogs at all times.
Q My Pomeranian hates it when, on a walk, other dogs come up behind him. When this happens - and the other dogs may be quite a long way off to begin with - he will turn around so he is facing them, lie down, and refuse to move until they have gone past. I cannot get him to move without yanking his lead, and I don’t feel this is the answer, so I have to stand and wait until the other dogs go past and feel a right lemon in the process!
Sometimes, he will bark and growl at the other dogs, sometimes he just lies there silently, and when they have gone past, he jumps up and continues on the walk. Why does he behave like this, and how should I deal with it?
