I wanted a kitchen that was different to everyone else’s

Jackie Germain chose soft neutrals and Moroccan- inspired tiles to create her dream modern kitchen
A calm base of neutrals is brought to life with soft-coloured tiles that bring interest and energy to the scheme

Total Cost £9,397

Good idea!

Kitchens naturally have lots of straight lines so shaped tiles offer a pretty relief.

Jackie Germain, 49, a viewing guide in an estate agency had her work cut out when faced with creating a stunning new kitchen in a room that was far from lovely. ‘The room was awful!’ she laughs. ‘The cupboards were falling apart, everything was incredibly old, wobbly or dated. There was no style, not enough storage and I knew from the start I had to rip everything out and begin again from scratch.’ Through her work showing people around properties every day, Jackie had seen more kitchens than most so had a good idea of what she did, and didn’t like. ‘There are so many white kitchens at the moment that I wanted to think outside that particular box, I didn’t want anything too dark, and I wanted to keep away from the monochrome style I see most days. With a little research I was confident I could achieve my dream kitchen - it was all really exciting!’ she smiles. With builders at the ready to start the work, Jackie collected brochures and magazines galore to search for inspiration to start the transformation.

About Your Home Magazine

I don’t know about you, but I always feel like we’ve turned a corner in April. The clocks have gone forward, so we’ve got longer, lighter days; the weather is getting warmer, so we can fling open the windows and let the fresh air in and the garden is bursting with colourful flowers beckoning us outside. And not forgetting, it’s Easter this month, which means we get a lovely long bank holiday weekend to look forward to (which is perfect for getting stuck into a spot of decorating)! So with all this on the horizon we’ve filled this issue with lots of exciting spring features. It’s time to ditch those furry throws and heavy winter curtains and lighten up your home’s look for the months ahead. On page 36 we take a look at the latest fabric trends and show how you can use them to give your home the ‘wow’ factor. While on page 42 we discover lots of great new products to take away your wash day blues. If you haven’t already noticed, green is the big colour trend for this year, so on page 20 we show how to give your home a gorgeous leafy green makeover with purse-friendly accessories. To celebrate Easter our Craft Editor, Sophie, has designed some adorable projects to brighten up your home – you’re going to love the cute little lambs (p.60)! And make sure you check out our quick and easy recipes on page 100, perfect for making your Easter family gettogether really special. Have a great month and a very happy Easter!
