This house needed a lot of work, but we jumped at the chance

Sara and Robert Scott transformed a dated period house in Edinburgh to create a vibrant and modern family home
The living room feels warm and cosy all year round thanks to the red palette. ‘We liked the colour of these sofas from ikea and the covers can be removed and washed so they have survived many a spillage,’ says sara. The curtain fabric came from remnant Kings and the curtains throughout were made by robert’s sister lynn, who has the soft furnishings business harbour interiors. The pale grey wall colour is a trade colour supplied by the decorator; White mist from dulux is similar

Sara and Robert Scott had been looking for a house in Edinburgh’s Trinity area for some time before spotting this property for sale back in 2007. ‘It was difficult to find a house of this size at our budget,’ says Sara, so even though this house needed work, the couple jumped at the chance.

‘It was a doer-upper,’ Sara says. ‘The house needed to have everything done. There was no central heating, and no kitchen when we moved in so we lived on microwaved food and barbecues for the first six months.’ The interior was very dated with its layers of wallpaper and old carpets, while the bathroom had five different types of tiling, none of which matched.

We’ve been scouring the high street and internet to find the most brilliant gift ideas for your family and friends (p.40) and they’re all under £50 – because let’s face it, we’re all on a budget this year aren’t we? We’ve also got some gorgeous decorating ideas and styling tips that are quick and easy to achieve and will make your home look really magical (p.36). If you love entertaining at Christmas, turn to page 100 where we’ve got some new twists to try on the traditional festive fare (take it from me, the maple roasted potatoes are divine!). But if you’d rather not spend time slaving over a hot stove during the festive season, we’ve also picked the best fuss-free food and drink from the supermarkets to make feeding family and friends a breeze (p.104). I know that some of you will be taking the opportunity to do a spot of decorating over the holiday season, so we’ve made sure there’s lots to inspire you in this issue. From our opulent room schemes on page 20, to our beautiful bedroom makeovers (p.24), you’re sure to find something that makes you want to pick up a paint brush.
