We used our skills to turn around a neglected property

Elke and Izaak turned a small run-down terraced house into a fresh and bright new home
The white leather sofa is from Ikea and the tall German timber cabinet is a family piece dating back to 1850. The glass table was bought at Cargo and the bespoke white linen curtains are from Tuiss

Good idea!

The couple are keen on recycling so they kept the best of the old Victorian pine floorboards from downstairs, then re-laid them in the bedrooms.

The couple think the fireplace, which now houses a morso stove, is victorian. The old pine floorboards were lifted and then re-used upstairs, then the couple laid engineered oak flooring throughout the ground floor. The wallpaper is the Cow Parsley design from sanderson

When Elke and her husband Izaak bought a two-bedroom Victorian end-of-terrace house in central Bristol it was, she says, ‘somewhat tired and neglected’. They chose it for its westfacing garden, the period features and because it was in the best catchment area for secondary schools. They also knew, as architects, how it could be remodelled and extended to make it into a more spacious and airy three-bedroom house.

About Your Home Magazine

Now that all the festive fun is over and the decorations have come down your home can look a little sorry for itself, but not for long. In this issue we’ve got plenty of quick, easy and affordable ideas to give your home a fresh new look for the year ahead. While the sales are on, it’s a great time to bag a bargain, but rather than just buy an item because it’s cheap, we explain which homewares are really worth parting with your cash for in the sales (p.42). But before you go mad in the sales and bring back lots of bargain booty, now is the time to give your home a post-Christmas detox. On page 36 we show how to clear your clutter in style and discover space you never knew you had. If your bathroom and kitchen are looking past their best, turn to pages 46 and 52 to discover how easy it is to freshen them up with a few simple additions, from modern metallics to rustic touches, we’ve got lots of ideas to inspire you. If your New Year’s resolutions involve getting fitter and eating better, then turn to page 56 where we compare the latest wearable fitness trackers, while on page 12 we put personal smoothie makers to the test to see which give the best results. We’ve even given this month’s recipes a healthy spin, so you can eat well from breakfast through to supper. Finally, we’ve given our 12-page Make it Easy pull-out section a fresh new look for the New Year. Turn to page 59 for exciting craft, sewing and upcycling projects, plus the latest must haves for your craft stash.
