We answer some of your DIY and maintenance questions, with a little help from the experts

Q I’m in the process of refurbishing my bathroom, and would really like a luxury, high-pressure shower. However, before I invest I need to know what requirements my water system needs to meet to power a high pressure shower?

A Jon Cockburn from Heatrae Sadia, offers this advice…

The first thing to do is to get your property assessed in order to find out what the mains pressure is. This will give you an idea of which water system is right for your home, and whether you can support a power shower. If you reach the minimum 1.5 bar requirement, consider an unvented hot water cylinder, such as a Megaflo. This will provide reliable high pressure hot water, even when other outlets, such as a second bathroom, are in use. If you decide to go for a high pressure system, ensure that your pipes are up to the necessary standard – old pipes which can handle lower pressure may buckle under the strain of a high pressure flow. Finally, if your mains pressure is exceptionally low, you could consider a boosted supply or an accumulator, however, these can be costly and aren’t always effective, so it may be worth rethinking your choice of shower.
