This is the house that eBay built!

Nici and Dan Civico have given their 150-year-old house an injection of contemporary design while preserving its character with bargain vintage finds

After viewing lots of rundown repossessed houses in the Newcastle suburb of Heaton, Nici and Dan Civico were starting to think they’d never find the right home.

Dan customised the Tomado shelves from eBay by having them powder-coated in different colours. Folklore enamel kitchenware from Baltic Shop sits atop an original Ercol table from Tynemouth Architectural Salvage. It’s been teamed with a £20 vintage unit from Lime Street Studios

Good idea!

Colourful shelving instead of wall cupboards will make a narrow kitchen feel less enclosed.

‘We were living in a two-bedroom flat in Gateshead when I fell pregnant with Arthur so we started looking for a bigger place,’ says Nici. ‘As we love period properties we decided to look in Heaton where there are lots of Victorian terraces, but we kept getting outbid every time we made an offer.’

Eventually the couple came across a three-bedroom house that hadn’t been modernised since the 1960s. ‘There were lots of pink walls, swirly carpets, panelling on the ceiling and a stairlift, as well as a bar in the dining room,’ says Nici. ‘Even though the décor wasn’t to our taste, I had a good feeling about this one. It had clearly been well looked after.’
