One look at the location and we were hooked

Pam and John Pitkin have completely rejuvenated their cottage from a dark, unloved and dated property into a pretty and homely place to be in
The natural colours of the sofa and chair from Argos teamed with a checked throw from The Tinahely Farm Shop and cushions from TK Maxx, give the room a country-style feel. To introduce a pop of colour Pam got the foot stool from Heatons

Back in 2013 when Pam and John Pitkin discovered this quaint little cottage in the village of Askanagap in Co. Wicklow, they fell in love with the location and the views. ‘I grew up in the area and regularly came back to visit family and friends, so I am very attached to this part of Ireland and had always dreamt of owning a property in the vicinity,’ says Pam.

When the couple first viewed the property it was derelict and had been empty for several years. It was damp, in a bad state of disrepair and looked dreary and uninviting, but the location was so picturesque that they were at once smitten. ‘We had a survey done and it was found to be structurally sound, so despite the amount of work that needed to be done we knew this cottage could be transformed into something cosy and homely,’ says Pam.

About Your Home Magazine

Well, autumn is well and truly upon us but I think there’s something quite comforting about the nights drawing in, and having the chance to curl up on the sofa in front of a roaring fire. In this issue we’ve got plenty of great ideas for making your home super cosy for the coming months. If you’re thinking of replacing your flooring with something warmer, or more stylish, underfoot then make sure you read our fantastic eight-page special on page 36 where we take a look at all the latest designs for floors. Meanwhile, on page 18, you can discover how to use this season’s woodland trend to create the ultimate cosy scheme for autumn. While our craft section this month has even more woodland-inspired projects to add the perfect finishing touches to your home (p.60). Does your kitchen need a quick revamp before it gets busy in the run-up to Christmas? Then take a look at our round-up of the latest looks for worktops and splashbacks (p.50) – you’ll be amazed how easy and affordable it is to give your kitchen a whole new look with this one simple change. If you have young kids, or family with mobility problems, then making your bathroom safe for them can often mean compromising on design, but our feature on page 56 shows you can combine form with function for a bathroom that still packs a style punch. Finally, if the weather starts to turn cold outside, turn to page 100 for some wonderful, warming comfort food recipes.
