Christian iconography, precious marble and stuccos (a fine plaster used for decoration) are marvels to behold within the walls of the eight Early Christian Monuments of Ravenna, along with celebrated mosaics considered to be the best surviving and most complete examples of this art form in Europe. All were constructed during the 5th and 6th centuries, and were a visual statement of the powerful role Ravenna played as the seat of the Western Roman Empire.
