Our experts are here to help with all your questions about Italy. This month, buying a house in season, making sgroppino, ethical food production, and the other thorny little subject of Brexit…

QAs spring arrives in Italy, I was wondering,

as a potential buyer, if there is a particular

time of year that is better than others in terms of

when to negotiate and buy a property?

A Good question. That sort of seasonality in a real estate market is more like what we’d expect in our home countries, in areas around major cities and for real estate that is likely to be a base from which we commute to work or send our kids to school. The property market for foreign buyers in Le Marche, for example, is different. That difference lies in the fact that foreigners are buying houses that local Italians are not likely looking for. The properties foreigners seek are more oriented toward holiday homes or running businesses in Le Marche, meaning it’s a true “niche” market. The market tends to be flatter, with a slight up-tick in summer, given that buyer traffic is much higher then. With that said, though, if there was a particular time when a buyer might find a more willing seller and be able to strike a particularly good deal I would say that it’s in the dead of winter, post-Christmas through mid-March. That would also depend a bit on who was selling… A foreign seller is almost always more willing to negotiate than an Italian seller.

Beth, our newest writer, revisits her beloved Rome, this time with a baby and grandparents in tow. Perugina, the producers of theiconic Baci, are under the spotlight as we trace the history of this venerable chocolate company, and we meet up with Giorgio Locatelli in our exclusive interview.
