A bridge too far?

An Italian court has fined the architect responsible for a Venetian bridge that has been beset by problems since it was built. The Ponte della Costituzione (Constitution Bridge), which spans the Grand Canal, was unveiled in 2008 but has seen controversy from the very start.

Made of glass and steel, it has been criticised for being slippery and numerous people have suffered falls while walking over it, especially during wet weather. In addition, the structure was created with no disabled access (a lift was later installed), and now some of the glass stairs, which should have lasted 20 years, need replacing.

About Italia!

We begin on the heel of Italy this month, where a return visit to Puglia is both a trip down memory lane and a voyage of discovery, exploring places like Ostuni, Locorotondo, Lecce and, of course, Alberobello. Venice after dark is our next adventure, when a night walk through the city reveals the ghostly secrets of days gone by. Hop on the Italian ‘Trans-Siberian Express’ for a journey through Abruzzo and Molise, and in this month of remembrance we pay tribute with the story of Monte Cassino, one of the Second World War’s most tragic battles.
