To live like an Italian, you have to embrace coffee culture. From Arabica to Robusta, here’s our pick of the black stuff

The art of making the perfect coffee has long been at the centre of heated discussions – every coffee-drinking caffeine aficionado has their own cherished method. In Italy, it seems there are as many coffees as there are pastas, each one with its own customs and traditions. Whether it’s an alcohol-infused caffè corretto thrown back like a shot, a relaxing cappuccino and cornetto for breakfast or a granita al caffè con panna to cool off from the midday sun, the Italians have a coffee for every occasion. It’s no secret that Italians love their coffee, but what you might not realize is that they follow a traditional coffee-drinking etiquette. In caffès all across Italy, locals only drink milky variations such as caffè latte or cappuccino for breakfast and never (as many foreigners do) after 11am. They also drink their espresso standing at the bar and served at a temperature that allows it to be downed as a quick pick-me-up throughout the day.

About Italia!

We begin on the heel of Italy this month, where a return visit to Puglia is both a trip down memory lane and a voyage of discovery, exploring places like Ostuni, Locorotondo, Lecce and, of course, Alberobello. Venice after dark is our next adventure, when a night walk through the city reveals the ghostly secrets of days gone by. Hop on the Italian ‘Trans-Siberian Express’ for a journey through Abruzzo and Molise, and in this month of remembrance we pay tribute with the story of Monte Cassino, one of the Second World War’s most tragic battles.
