Roam by rail in southern Sardinia from Cagliari to Arbatax

Dispel all thoughts of steam engines bellowing smoke and pulling historic wooden carriages – sensible legislation forbids the use of steam in the dry summer months

Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean, has two railway systems: the Italian state owned and run railway Trenitalia (FS), and ARST, which is owned by the regional government under the brand name Trenino Verde, on which a tourist service runs during the summer.

Cagliari-Arbatax is one of the Trenino Verde’s four lines, but it may only be possible to do a section of it – see the website for more detail and current schedules. The others are Mandas-Sorgono (a fork from the route described here), Bosa-Macomer-Nuoro in the middle of the island and Sassari- Tempio-Palau in the north.

There are two other ways to travel on Trenino Verde trains apart from on scheduled tourist trips. Either you can privately hire a whole train, or you can hope for a ‘last minute’ opportunity to hop on board rolling stock being relocated, in which case you will be charged a heavily reduced fare.

About Italia!

We start our exploration of 'il bel paese' in the beautiful northern region of Piedmont. From elegant, cultured cities to the rural heartland of premium wine production, this is a wonderfully diverse place to visit. Our first stop is at the fragrant lavender fields of Sale San Giovanni near Barolo, known as ‘little Provence’.
