Even as one the world’s best goalkeepers, David de Gea could be facing one of his most important seasons yet, writes Steve Bartram

If, as expected, David de Gea pens a new longterm contract to remain at Manchester beyond this, his ninth campaign in England, he will be signing up to spend his late 20s and early 30s as one of the experienced members of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s fresh-faced new team. If the Spaniard eschews United’s offer to stay, he will need to spend the season convincing suitors that he is capable of returning to the lofty heights at which he has spent the vast majority of his Old Trafford career.

Either way, for the first time in the post- Sir Alex Ferguson era, United’s No.1 has started a new season with a point to prove. Enlisted to replace Edwin van der Sar in 2011, at the age of just 20, the willowy youngster was subjected to sustained media criticism during his first six months at Old Trafford. Though he grew in stature during the course of his debut campaign, it wasn’t until midway through his second term, 2012/13, that he managed to convince Ferguson that he should be the Reds’ established first choice ahead of Anders Lindegaard.
