Arthur Conan Doyle wasn’t the first writer to come from Portsmouth – the city that Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling and H G Wells all called home at some stage of their lives – but he was the first to stand between the sticks. Conan Doyle played under the rather unimaginative pseudonym AC Smith and he played for Portsmouth Association Football Club – a forerunner to the club that now bears the name. He was part of the original committee that set up the club following a meeting at the Blue Anchor pub in the city. The creator of the still world famous Sherlock Holmes, would alternate positions, playing in goal one game and as a full-back the next.
