One of the loveliest flowers you can grow must be nigella (Nigella damascena). This bushy hardy annual only produced blue flowers originally but is now available in an array of colours, its starry flowerheads enveloped in delicate, fennel-like foliage – hence its common name ‘love-in-a mist’. On a bright summer’s day it is a delight to see these floral jewels bobbing to and fro in the breeze.
