For the last few years I have been growi strawberries in various pots around the garden, but each year seem to be encountering the same problem. The pot e full of vine weevils munching on the roots! I change the soil each year but they still keep coming back. What would be a good method to prevent them from returning year after year so I can have good healthy plants with lots of strawberries?

Janet Oliver, Cheshire

David Patch, professional nurseryman, R V Roger Ltd

DAVID SAYS: Vine weevils in pots are enacious little chaps – but the good ws is they can be beaten. Are you using the same plants each year when you repot? If so, the larvae will be clinging in amongst the roots of your plants. Good hygiene is the key. Wash your pots with a solution of garden disinfectant and use fresh top-quality compost. I would advise starting with fresh plants, but if you want to use your existing plants clean the roots as best you can and then leave them soaking in a bucket of water for a day, fully immersed. This should kill any pests.
