DOn’t LEAVE YOUR FRUIT TREES DRY!

It is important to make sure that fruit trees have sufficient water, particularly if the summer is a hot one. David Patch explains why water is so important and what we can do to conserve it around our fruit trees

The summer last year was a scorcher. Every day seemed to be picture postcard weather, sun streaming down from endless blue skies. Fantastic news if you owned a business selling barbecues perhaps, but not good news for many gardeners and fruit growers.

The sun and heat were ideal for ripening fruit, and the sugar levels were generally very high. However, the lack of any significant rainfall for several months last year caused many problems — yields were lower, fruit size was generally on the small side, and some plants just didn’t make the amount of growth that would normally be expected.

In this month’s article we are going to look at the watering and water conservation of fruit trees, so we may all continue to enjoy bumper crops even if we have a repeat of last year.
