Growing crops takes lots of nutrients out of your soil. Green manures offer a natural way to put something back explains KG editor Steve Ott

Most of us appreciate that our soil needs some TLC if it is to go on producing crops year after year and will be making eforts to keep it healthy and productive. For many gardeners this probably means digging in lots of well-rotted manure or garden compost in the autumn. Or perhaps you are a fan of no-dig and prefer to simply add thick mulches to the surface. Maybe you like to add artiicial fertilisers such as Growmore or perhaps you do a combination of these things. But there is another way to get lifepromoting humus and nutrients into your hard-working ground and that is by using the age-old technique of green manuring.


Try never to leave soil exposed at any time, but particularly in winter. Areas which are not cropping are better covered with a green manure crop
