Japanese wineberry
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK WITH
Growing soft fruit is one of the most rewarding of tasks in the garden. Generally forgiving and easy to grow, there is nothing to beat picking sun-ripened berries in the dog days of summer, glorious jewels of flavour and sweetness. However, hybrid berries – generally crosses between raspberries and blackberries – seem to be little known. I think this is because the fruit is generally never for sale in shops as it is delicate and bruises easily, so few people have actually tasted a ripe tayberry or boysenberry. Whatever the reason, they are some of the best fruits for the home gardener and deserve to be much more popular.
