There’s nothing more British than afternoon tea, surely? Well, not exactly. Tea drinking became popular with British aristocrats in the 17th century mainly because it was the favourite drink of King Charles II’s Portuguese wife, Catherine of Braganza. However, it took another 200 years for tea to become more widely popular. And it was only when tea was imported from China that it became cheap enough for ordinary people to enjoy.
