LEARNING OBJECTIVES
■ How to use brushes to create various effects and textures
■ Make sense of green in a tree-filled landscape
■ Colour mixing for landscapes
In last month’s article, I suggested the following would help you to paint landscapes and especially trees in landscapes, where green predominates:
1 Carefully prepare the palette with mixed warm colours instead of the greens provided by the manufacturers, which are often far too vivid.
2 Spend time testing and practise painting the trees in the composition before committing them to the finished painting.
3 Choose a landscape where the green areas are broken up with features that have contrasting colours, such as walls, paths and buildings. Furthermore, limit the size of areas of green foliage, ensuring they don’t completely overpower the composition. It is for precisely those reasons that I chose this photograph (below) as the basis for the following demonstration.
