This is a simplified version of another painting where I put the source of light coming from behind the mount, leaving it as a simple silhouette. The boat was added and placed so that it is pointing towards the focal point. The strip of water in the foreground also acts as a lead-in, taking you towards our focal point.
If you are planning to draw an outline onto the pastel paper don’t use a pencil, as pastel will not adhere to the pencil lines. I use either a pastel pencil or a fine point Biro.
Tape your pastel paper along the top and bottom to a piece of smooth board and prop this at an angle of around 35 to 45 degrees to allow excess pastel dust to fall away. Fold a piece of newspaper and place it under the bottom edge of the board to catch excess pastel dust.
