Backlit lily

How to paint a delicate pale flower against a darker background, by Jackie Barrass

How to paint positive and negative shapes

Practise the wet-in-wet technique

How to handle watercolour

Positive and negative shapes are used to portray this well-lit lily. The paint is applied using a controlled wet-into-wet technique. Let the medium do the work and try not to overpaint the flower head so that it becomes laboured and dull. LP
