How to create form through the application of colour and tone

Follow an oil-painting process with a limited palette

The finished painting El-Babu et Ricco de Qinghai, oil on canvas, 16x20in. (40x50cm)

Acouple from Germany asked me to paint a portrait of their two much-loved dogs, El-Babu and Ricco. As I am based in Australia, I had to think about the best way to ship the completed painting to them. Boxing and shipping a wrap-around or framed canvas internationally is quite expensive and risky, with the danger of punctures to the package, so I decided to do the painting on loose primed canvas that could be rolled into a tube.
