Discover how useful gouache can be

Garden in Poland, watercolour with gouache, 8x101⁄2in. (20x27cm)

Gouache, also known as body colour, has been used by artists for over 600 years. It is made up of a high ratio of colour pigment and gum Arabic as a binding agent, just like watercolour, but it also includes a solid white pigment, such as chalk. It has a lovely heavy velvet-like texture that absorbs light, to create a smooth appearance, which makes it ideal for opaque coverage.

Like watercolour, gouache is sold in small tubes or tubs. It is diluted with water before you paint, but will be far less translucent than watercolour when diluted with the same amount of liquid.
